Red Flags for Top Republican After Claims He ‘Manipulated’ Trump’s TV Endorsement

Texas Senate Race Heats Up with New Challenges for John Cornyn

The 2026 re-election campaign of Senator John Cornyn, a long-standing Republican figure in Texas, is facing significant challenges. His bid for a fifth term has become more complicated due to allegations of manipulating a Trump endorsement and underwhelming fundraising results in the second quarter.

According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) data, Cornyn raised just over $800,000 in the last three months. However, the Cornyn Victory Fund, which distributes funds between Cornyn, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and leadership PACs, reported an additional $3.1 million in contributions. This totals over $3.9 million, with $8.9 million in cash on hand, according to his campaign team.

In contrast, Ken Paxton, Cornyn’s primary challenger and a Trump ally, raised $2.9 million and currently has $2.5 million in cash reserves. Paxton’s team has used this discrepancy to criticize Cornyn, claiming that it reflects widespread support in Texas for replacing what they call an “establishment insider” with a “conservative warrior” like Paxton.

Cornyn’s campaign has responded by highlighting their fundraising success, emphasizing that their total haul exceeds $3.9 million. Meanwhile, Senator Ted Cruz, who is not up for re-election until 2030, raised $1.75 million in the same period. The numbers underscore the competitive nature of the race and the importance of financial backing in political campaigns.

Controversy Over Alleged Doctored Audio

Adding to the controversy, a pro-Cornyn super PAC, Texans for a Conservative Majority, is accused of altering audio from a 2019 Trump rally to make it appear as if the former president endorsed Cornyn. The ad is set to run statewide starting Wednesday.

Laura Loomer, a Trump ally and far-right activist, first raised concerns about the alleged manipulation. In the original 2019 footage, Trump praised both Texas Senators Cornyn and Cruz for their work advancing his agenda. The altered version reportedly removes the ‘s’ from “Senators” and omits any mention of Cruz. The PAC, which raised nearly $11 million in the second quarter, is investing heavily in this ad.

Axios reported in May that Chris LaCivita, a former Trump campaign manager, is serving as a senior adviser to the pro-Cornyn group. Despite these efforts, Trump has not yet officially endorsed Cornyn in the race.

Cornyn’s Voting Record Under Scrutiny

Cornyn’s political record has also come under fire. Since 2019, he has voted against the majority of his GOP colleagues on several key issues, leading to accusations of being a “Republican in name only.” While he claims a 99% alignment with President Trump, conservative groups have expressed dissatisfaction.

Heritage Action, the grassroots arm of the Heritage Foundation, ranks Cornyn’s votes at 35% aligned with its values, significantly lower than his lifetime score of 64%. Similarly, the American Conservative Union has lowered his rating from nearly 87% to 77%.

Cornyn’s most controversial vote came in 2022 when he joined 15 other GOP senators in supporting the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a major victory for President Biden. This decision was influenced by public pressure following the Uvalde school shooting. In contrast, fellow Texas Senator Ted Cruz refused to support the bill.

Ken Paxton Faces His Own Set of Challenges

While Cornyn faces fundraising and credibility issues, Paxton is not without controversy. He was impeached in 2023 over allegations of hiring a woman with whom he had an affair. His wife, Texas State Senator Angela Paxton, recently filed for divorce, citing that it was not in the best interests of their family to remain married.

Paxton has also faced corruption allegations but has never been convicted of a crime. Despite these challenges, he remains a strong contender in the GOP primary.

Democratic Primary Still Undecided

The winner of the GOP primary will face the Democratic nominee, whose identity is still uncertain. Recent polling by the National Republican Senatorial Committee shows Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett leading in hypothetical matchups, with 35% of likely voters supporting her. Other candidates include former Rep. Colin Allred and Beto O’Rourke, while 18% remain undecided.

Crockett has gained attention as a vocal critic of the Trump administration and has made bold statements about her political future. In an interview with Hasan Minhaj, she mentioned her “expiration date in mind for the House” and hinted at plans to replace certain figures.

As the race intensifies, both sides are preparing for a highly contested battle in Texas, where the outcome could have significant implications for the national political landscape.
