A Student’s Journey of Determination and Resilience
A university student refused to let financial challenges define his future. Instead of giving up or making excuses, he took action and used his creativity and hard work to earn money. His efforts did not go unnoticed, as a video highlighting his story received widespread praise from netizens for his determination and resilience.
The education sector in many regions is becoming increasingly challenging, with students facing numerous financial obstacles that make it difficult to continue their studies. This situation has pushed many individuals to seek alternative ways to support their education. One such student, Frankline Otongo, from Kisii county, decided to take matters into his own hands.
Otongo is a second-year student at Chuka University, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Mathematics. To support his studies, he started a small business with the help of his cousin. Together, they launched a venture selling smokies and mayai pasua, which are popular street foods in the region.
Overcoming Personal Challenges
Frankline’s journey has been marked by significant personal struggles. He shared a heartbreaking story about his background, revealing that he was raised by his grandmother after his mother left when he was very young. He lost his father during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, leaving him as an orphan. Despite these hardships, he has continued to push forward.
“My whole life, I have been brought up by my grandmother. My mum left when I was still a little boy. I lost my dad during the corona era in 2020, so I am an orphan. My relatives have been paying my fees and helping me in other areas. However, they also have families and other financial obligations. As much as I rely on them, it’s also important for me to find something to do and try to gain some independence,” he said.
Starting the Business
To kickstart his entrepreneurial journey, Otongo received support from his cousin, who helped him acquire a trolley, smokies, and eggs. He estimated that he spent at least KSh 15,000 to start the business, which he hopes will provide him with financial independence.
“I want to earn money to add to my school fees and pay my rent so that I can ease some of the financial burden on my relatives. I have only a few years left to complete my university education, and I hope to have a better future afterward. I do not have the luxury to choose work,” he added.
Public Appreciation and Support
Kenyans were deeply impressed by Otongo’s attitude and proactive approach. Many took to social media to commend his efforts and express their admiration for his determination.

One day he said, ‘Mom, wuuueeh this sun is scorching!’ and I told him, ‘That’s where money comes from.’ I’m happy for Frankline. He will be fine and finish school.”

Another Student’s Initiative
In a similar story, another student, Edna Mwango from Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), turned to entrepreneurship to avoid dropping out of school. Faced with the fear of not being able to afford her fees, she began selling sukuma wiki at night to raise money and clear her arrears.
These stories highlight the resilience and determination of students who are finding creative ways to support their education and build a better future for themselves. Their actions serve as an inspiration to others, showing that with perseverance and hard work, even the most challenging circumstances can be overcome.
