Introduction to the 2026 Subaru Outback
Subaru has officially launched its 2026 Outback, marking the seventh generation of this iconic mid-sized SUV. The model made its debut at the New York Auto Show in 2025 and celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Over three million units have been sold in the U.S. alone, cementing its status as a symbol of off-road adventure and reliability.
The new Outback combines performance, practicality, and an adventurous design with a modern interior. It features Symmetric All-Wheel Drive and ISITE driver support technology, which includes the latest active safety equipment. This model is designed to meet the needs of drivers who seek both comfort and capability on and off the road.
Design Enhancements
The exterior design of the 2026 Outback is bolder than ever, giving it a more commanding presence on the road. Vertical headlights at the four corners enhance visibility both on and off the road. The lower part of the vehicle is textured to provide anti-scratch functionality and improved aerodynamics.
The side profile maintains the Outback’s unique ratio, while the silhouette has been redesigned into a boxier shape to emphasize the vehicle’s height and durability. The wider rear roof pillars behind the rear doors showcase the structural rigidity of the new model.
The 2026 Outback comes with a roof rail that can carry up to 360 kg and has a load capacity of 100 kg for off-road convenience. Subaru’s first crossbar offers lateral load capacity of up to 100 kg, allowing for the attachment of hammocks or clotheslines.
Interior Features and Technology
Inside, the 2026 Outback boasts a calm and neat horizontal design. Headliners are made from materials derived from 12 recycled plastic bottles, reflecting Subaru’s commitment to sustainability. The infotainment system includes a 12.1-inch multimedia display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, along with a 12.3-inch full digital gauge cluster.
The interior layout is designed with everyday usability in mind. Dedicated hard buttons and knob controls are included for the air conditioning system. A center console cup holder accommodates a 1-liter bottle of water, adding to the convenience.
A vertical menu bar within the 12.1-inch touchscreen allows for easy navigation through functions such as navigation, music, and phone. An information bar provides real-time updates on vehicle status, external temperature, and Subaru’s new cloud-based speech recognition system.
The air conditioning system can be operated using physical buttons located at the bottom of the touch screen, making it accessible even when wearing gloves in cold weather. The loading space has been expanded by 13.7 liters compared to the previous model, thanks to a 5 cm higher roofline and a completely new design.
Comfort and Performance
The new Outback offers enhanced headroom for both front and rear passengers. The low-fatigue seats, mounted directly on the chassis, improve comfort during long trips by reducing head shaking. Wind noise has also been reduced by 10% due to aerodynamic improvements on the body sides and roof rails.
The 2026 Outback is equipped with the latest ISITE driver support technology, including pre-crash braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, lane departure warning, emergency stop support, front cross-vehicle braking, acceleration override assist, vibration haptic steering wheel, and lane departure warning.
A driver-assisted highway hands-free function is available up to 136 km/h, supported by three front cameras and a newly added radar sensor. The powertrain combines a 2.5-liter boxer engine producing 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft torque with an 8-speed manual shift mode CVT. The symmetrical four-wheel drive system ensures optimal traction.
High-performance XT and Wilderness models feature a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine delivering up to 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft torque. The transmission remains the same across all variants.
Ground Clearance and Wheel Options
The 2026 Outback offers a ground clearance of approximately 21 cm, surpassing many competitors in the full-size SUV segment. This provides a comfortable foothold height and a low loading space for easier cargo handling. For the first time, 19-inch wheels are available on certain trims, while the Wilderness model comes with 17-inch wheels and all-terrain tires.
Pricing and Availability
Pricing for the 2026 Subaru Outback starts at $30,000 (about 41 million won) for the base trim. The top-tier wellness trim is expected to reach $50,000 (KRW 68 million). The model is set to begin its sales cycle in the second half of the year, offering a range of trims including Premium, Limited, Touring, Limited XT, Touring XT, and Wilderness.
