Alaska Summit Leaves Ukraine Disappointed

The Alaska Summit: A Missed Opportunity for Ukraine

The Alaska summit, which many had hoped would bring about a breakthrough in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, ended up being a disappointment for many Ukrainians. The event, held between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, was anticipated to yield meaningful results, especially regarding the war that has been raging since 2022. However, it became clear that the meeting did not lead to any significant changes.

No Concrete Results, Just a Photo Op

Oleksandr Kraiev, an expert from the Ukrainian Prism think tank, expressed his disappointment with the outcome of the summit. He stated that there were no concrete results for Ukraine and that nothing was signed or decided. According to Kraiev, the summit was more of an information operation for Russia, allowing Putin to appear as a legitimate leader on the global stage.

Kraiev noted that Trump’s deference toward Putin during the meeting left many questions unanswered. He believed that Putin handled the situation with precision, offering Trump exactly what he wanted to hear. This allowed Putin to achieve his goals without making any substantial commitments.

Ivan Us, an expert from Ukraine’s Center for Foreign Policy, suggested that Putin never intended for the summit to end the war. Instead, his main objective was to legitimize himself internationally and reduce his isolation. For Trump, the meeting was a way to demonstrate strength by showing that the United States remains the most powerful country in the world.

Uncertainty Following the Summit

The summit created more uncertainty than clarity. Ivan Us pointed out that the conflicting statements from the US and Russia about possible trilateral dialogue involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have only added to the confusion. Moscow claims that the topic of a trilateral meeting was not discussed, while Washington insists otherwise.

Zelenskyy himself mentioned receiving an invitation to a trilateral meeting, expressing support for Trump’s proposal. He emphasized that important issues could be addressed at the level of heads of state and that a trilateral format is suitable for such discussions. However, there are concerns that this could lead to increased pressure on Ukraine from the US.

Moscow’s Unchanging Goals

There are fears that Zelenskyy’s trip to Washington could result in new pressures from the US on Ukraine. Iryna Herashchenko, a Ukrainian MP, warned that any refusal from Ukraine could be seen as a lack of willingness to end the war. She believes that such formulations allow Moscow to present these discussions as legitimization of its demands.

Herashchenko also highlighted that Putin reiterated his stance that the actual causes of the conflict must be eliminated. This means that Moscow will not change its goals, as it sees the existence of an independent Ukraine as the root cause of the conflict.

A New Window for Negotiations?

Vadym Denisenko, a Ukrainian political scientist, believes that Russia’s idea of “doing business with the US in exchange for Ukrainian territory” did not work. However, he argues that Putin managed to gain time, albeit at the cost of his maneuverability. Denisenko predicts that if no results regarding the end of the war are achieved within two months, the issue will become part of Chinese-American negotiations.

He estimates that a new window for negotiations will open earliest at the end of the year, realistically only in spring 2026.

The Red Carpet Controversy

One of the most controversial aspects of the summit was the red carpet rolled out for Putin at the US military base in Anchorage. Many Ukrainians were outraged by this gesture, seeing it as a symbol of complicity in crime. Mustafa Nayyem, a former parliament member, criticized the decision, stating that it honored a leader responsible for the deaths and suffering of countless Ukrainians.

The controversy surrounding the red carpet has sparked widespread anger and disappointment among ordinary Ukrainians, who view the gesture as a betrayal of their struggles. The summit, instead of bringing hope, has deepened the sense of disillusionment and uncertainty about the future of the conflict.
