A Celebration of Hope and Health
The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Mariya Mahmoud, recently expressed her admiration for the First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, for her unwavering dedication to maternal and child welfare through the annual First Baby of the Year initiative. This event has become a significant symbol of hope and compassion in the nation.
Mahmoud highlighted the initiative as a “compassionate and enduring tradition” that showcases the First Lady’s deep concern for mothers and newborns. She emphasized that the initiative represents a new beginning for every year, offering a sense of optimism and renewal.
During an event held in Abuja, Mahmoud joined the First Lady to welcome the first baby of 2026, who was born at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi. In a statement released by her media aide, Austine Elemue, Mahmoud extended her congratulations to the parents and family of the newborn. She described the child’s birth as a powerful symbol of hope, renewal, and fresh beginnings for the FCT and the country as a whole.
In addition to celebrating the new life, Mahmoud commended the hard work of health workers, including doctors, nurses, midwives, and other support staff. Their dedication ensures safe deliveries and quality maternal and child healthcare, particularly during festive periods when demand is high.
Reaffirming the commitment of the FCT Administration to strengthening the health sector, Mahmoud stated that the administration would continue to improve facilities, deploy skilled personnel, and expand access to healthcare services. This effort aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, aiming to create a healthier environment for all residents.
As the new year begins, Mahmoud urged everyone to recommit to safeguarding mothers and children, supporting families, and fostering a healthier Abuja. She emphasized that the FCT Administration under the leadership of Barrister Nyesom Wike will continue to encourage residents to prioritize health and family well-being as a foundation for shared prosperity.
Neonatal Kits Distribution: A Step Toward Better Care
The FCT Women Affairs Secretariat has initiated the distribution of essential neonatal kits to nursing mothers at primary healthcare centres across the six area councils of the territory. This initiative reflects the First Lady’s ongoing commitment to maternal and child welfare.
Representing the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, Idris Yahaya, the Director of the Child Development Department, explained that the distribution of the kits is a long-standing tradition. It underscores the First Lady’s concern for maternal and child welfare and her dedication to giving children a healthy start in life.
The kits include a variety of essential items such as:
- Baby wrappers and blankets
- Baby clothes
- Disposable or reusable diapers
- Baby towels
- Baby soap
- Baby lotion or petroleum jelly
- Methylated spirit for cord care
- Hand sanitizers and other essential supplies
These items are crucial for ensuring the well-being of newborns and their mothers, especially in the early stages of life.
A Collective Effort for a Healthier Future
The First Baby of the Year initiative not only celebrates the arrival of a new life but also highlights the collective effort required to ensure that every mother and child receives the care they deserve. Through the combined efforts of government officials, healthcare workers, and community leaders, the FCT continues to make strides toward a healthier and more prosperous future for all its residents.
By focusing on maternal and child health, the administration is laying the groundwork for a stronger society. The distribution of neonatal kits and the continued support for initiatives like the First Baby of the Year are just some of the ways in which this vision is being realized.
As the FCT moves forward, it remains committed to improving healthcare access, promoting family well-being, and creating an environment where every individual can thrive. With the leadership of figures like Mariya Mahmoud and the First Lady, the path ahead looks promising for the people of the Federal Capital Territory.
