Virgin Media Retires Support for BBC iPlayer on Older TiVo Boxes

Starting on Wednesday, 23 July, BBC iPlayer will no longer be supported on older TV boxes used by some Virgin Media customers. This change specifically affects users who still rely on the TiVo box to access the streaming service. As a result, these customers will lose the ability to watch BBC iPlayer content unless they upgrade to a newer model.

The affected devices are part of Virgin Media’s older hardware lineup, which has been gradually phased out in favor of more modern alternatives. Customers who use the TiVo box and have accessed BBC iPlayer in the past six months have received direct communication from Virgin Media about the upcoming changes. The company is offering a free upgrade to the Virgin TV 360 box, which was released in 2020 and supports BBC iPlayer as well as other popular streaming platforms.

This move is part of a broader strategy by Virgin Media to modernize its offerings and improve user experience. The TiVo box, introduced over a decade ago in 2010, was once a popular choice for recording content and accessing on-demand services. However, it has since been overtaken by newer models that offer enhanced performance and compatibility with current streaming technologies.

Virgin Media has not provided an official reason for the discontinuation of BBC iPlayer support on the TiVo box. However, it is likely due to the limitations of the older hardware, which may not be able to handle updates or new features required by the platform. The company has also been working on upgrading its range of devices, including the recent release of the compact Stream box. This small, portable device offers access to a variety of streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, and Paramount+.

This upgrade includes a more modern interface, improved performance, and continued support for BBC iPlayer and other streaming apps. In addition to this update, Virgin Media O2 has begun shutting down its 3G network across the UK. The process started in Durham earlier this year and will continue throughout the year. Cities such as Norwich, Telford, and Guildford have already lost 3G connectivity, with Torquay set to follow on 4 August. This transition aims to provide faster and more reliable 4G and 5G services, which will also benefit customers using mobile networks like Giffgaff, Sky Mobile, and Tesco Mobile.
