Makinde Launches 5.9km Dualised Akobo-Ojurin-Olorunda Abaa Road

Governor Seyi Makinde Commits to Infrastructure Development in Oyo State

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, recently commissioned the newly-dualised 5.9 kilometers Akobo–Ojurin–Olorunda Abaa road. This strategic project is designed to connect rural communities, enhance trade, and improve transportation across the region. The governor emphasized that this initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to inclusive development and transforming the state’s landscape.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by several key figures, including the Deputy Governor of the state, Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal. Governor Makinde highlighted that the project is a testament to the visionary leadership of the administration. He noted that the road has been named after Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu, recognizing his significant contributions to the state’s growth.

A Milestone in Development

The construction of the road is part of Governor Makinde’s electioneering promises made in 2023. It serves as a critical link connecting communities and boosting economic activity in Lagelu Local Government and beyond. During the event held at the Nathaniel Idowu Comprehensive High School in Olorunda Abaa, Ibadan, the governor expressed immense pleasure at witnessing the fulfillment of his promise.

He stated that the road, once a symbol of neglect, has now been upgraded to world-class standards. The project includes solar-powered street lighting, drainage systems, and tarred adjoining access roads to enhance connectivity and safety. This initiative is part of a broader dualised corridor stretching from Idi-Ape to Basorun to Akobo-Ojurin to Olorunda Abaa and Eniosa Junction.

Broader Impact on Oyo State

Governor Makinde also spoke about other infrastructure projects that have contributed to the state’s progress. These include the 76.7km Ogbomoso-Fapote-Iseyin Road, which connects two major economic zones and enhances regional agricultural trade. The 34.85km Oyo-Iseyin Road has drastically reduced travel time while increasing access to rural communities. Additionally, the dualisation of the 12.5km Challenge-Odo Ona-Elewe-Apata Road in Ibadan has eased intra-city traffic and improved commuter experiences.

Other notable projects include the reconstruction of the Moniya–Iseyin Road, completed in the first term, and the Airport-Ajia-New Ife Expressway with a spur to Amuloko, which enhances access to the Ibadan Airport and encourages investments in the state. The Ibadan Circular Road and similar initiatives continue to demonstrate the governor’s commitment to building infrastructure that supports economic growth.

Recognition of Local Efforts

The governor praised Lagelu Local Government for completing the landmark project, following the path set by Ido Local Government, which completed the 10.3 kilometres Omi Adio-Ido Junction Road in December 2023. He emphasized that all local governments in the state have benefited from various people-oriented developments under the Omituntun 2.0 roadmap.

Under this plan, each of the state’s 33 local government areas is a beneficiary of projects ranging from road construction to health facilities, model schools, rural electrification, and water projects. Governor Makinde has ensured that no community is left behind, reinforcing a people-first governance philosophy.

Collaboration and Support

The Executive Chairman of Lagelu Local Government, Hon. Mudashiru, expressed gratitude to Governor Makinde for his commitment to the state’s development. He highlighted that the dualised road was conceived, awarded, and executed by the local government, showcasing how Oyo State’s version of local government autonomy is working for residents.

Representatives from the contractor, Messrs Samchase Nigeria Limited, also acknowledged the government’s trust in their work. They appreciated the support from the people of Lagelu Local Government, emphasizing that the new road will accommodate more traffic and boost economic activities in the area.

Community Appreciation

Several community leaders and representatives expressed their appreciation for Governor Makinde’s efforts. The member representing Akinyele/Lagelu Federal Constituency, Hon. Wasiu Olafisoye, and the member representing Lagelu State Constituency, Hon. Akintunde Olajide, commended the governor for investing in the state’s growth. The Oyo State PDP Women Leader, Chief (Mrs) Wulemotu Ibitoye, also recognized the dividends of democracy delivered to the people.

Traditional leaders, including the Ololorunda of Olorunda Abaa, Oba Samuel Abiodun Folarin, and the former President-General, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, Chief (Dr) Yemi Soladoye, appreciated the governor’s efforts in fulfilling his promises to the community.

The event was attended by prominent figures such as the former Deputy Governor of the State, Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarumi; Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Debo Ogundoyin (represented by Hon. Gbenga Oyekola); Deputy Chief of Staff, Hon. Kazim Adeniyi; Commissioners, Service Commanders, local government chairmen, traditional rulers, and religious leaders.
