Record-Breaking Sales for Nintendo Switch 2 and Forza Horizon 5
The Nintendo Switch 2 has continued to set new benchmarks in the global gaming market, marking a significant milestone in console sales. Following its launch, the device has become the fastest-selling gaming hardware ever recorded, with an impressive 3.5 million units sold within just four days. This achievement highlights the growing demand for hybrid consoles that offer both home and portable gaming experiences.
In the United States, the Switch 2 has further solidified its position as a game-changer. According to Mat Piscatella, an analyst at Circana, the console made history by becoming the fastest-selling video game hardware in U.S. history. The figures are staggering: the Switch 2 sold 1.6 million units in June alone, making it the highest-selling hardware in a single month. This is particularly notable since June is typically a slow period for video game releases.
Previously, Sony’s PlayStation 4 held the record with 1.1 million units sold during its launch in November 2013. However, even the PlayStation 5, which reportedly sold between 1.1 million and 1.3 million units upon its release in 2020, has now been surpassed by the Switch 2. This shift signals a strong consumer preference for Nintendo’s latest offering.
Japan has also witnessed the Switch 2’s dominance, where it outsold the original Switch by 300%. In Japan, the console achieved the same record of being the fastest-selling console ever, surpassing the PlayStation 2. This success underscores the global appeal of the Switch 2, with its unique blend of family-friendly games and versatile gameplay options.
Despite the Switch 2’s impressive sales, the PlayStation 5 still holds the title of the best-selling console of the year so far in terms of both units and revenue. However, the gap is narrowing, and the competition is heating up as more titles hit the market.
Game Sales and Chart Performance
Looking at the June game charts, Elden Ring Nightreign maintained its top position for the second consecutive month. Death Stranding 2: On The Beach entered the charts at number two, while Mario Kart World debuted at number three. It’s important to note that these figures reflect only physical sales and do not include digital sales or hardware bundles, meaning the actual rankings could be different.
Another standout performer this month is Forza Horizon 5 on the PlayStation 5. The game climbed to sixth place on the U.S. sales chart, following Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Stellar Blade. The latter saw a boost after its PC launch, highlighting the growing importance of cross-platform availability.
According to the Alinea Insight newsletter, Forza Horizon 5 has sold over three million copies on PlayStation 5 in less than three months since its April release. Within 25 days of its launch, the game sold two million copies, outpacing other popular titles like Astro Bot, which took about three months to reach the same milestone. Death Stranding 2 also sold one million copies within 25 days, showcasing the game’s immediate appeal.
By crossing the three million mark, Forza Horizon 5 has surpassed Monster Hunter Wilds (2.9 million) as the best-selling new game on PlayStation 5 in 2025. This development is a surprise to both Sony and Microsoft, especially considering the game originally launched nearly four years ago. The success of Forza Horizon 5 may encourage Microsoft to continue its strategy of multiplatform releases.
Upcoming Releases and Industry Trends
Microsoft is already planning for future multiplatform releases, with Gears of War: Reloaded set to launch on August 26 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Additionally, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is scheduled for release on August 12, with rumors circulating about Starfield and Halo potentially joining the PlayStation lineup next.
As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, the competition between major players like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft shows no signs of slowing down. With new titles and strategies emerging, the industry remains dynamic and exciting for gamers worldwide.
