McLaren’s Rise and the Impact of Rob Marshall
McLaren has been making waves in Formula 1, particularly during the second half of the 2023 season. The team’s continued progress into 2024 has been attributed to several factors, with the addition of Rob Marshall to its technical management structure being a significant one. Marshall, who previously worked at Red Bull, was brought on board in January 2024. His experience from Red Bull’s successful years in 2022 and 2023 played a key role in shaping the development of McLaren’s 2024 car, the MCL38, and later influencing the design of this year’s MCL39.
The MCL39 has emerged as a strong contender in both championships, showcasing the effectiveness of Marshall’s contributions. His expertise in bridging the gap between vehicle dynamics and aerodynamics has been recognized by industry insiders. Dan Fallows, former technical chief at Aston Martin and a former colleague of Marshall at Red Bull, has spoken highly of his impact on McLaren.
A Key Figure in Technical Leadership
Fallows, who appeared on the James Allen on F1 podcast, highlighted Marshall’s ability to bring different departments together. He described Marshall as someone who could effectively communicate between the aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics teams, ensuring that their efforts were aligned. This collaboration is crucial, especially under the current regulation set, where integration between aerodynamic and mechanical components is vital for performance.
“Sometimes, particularly with this regulation set, it’s very important to be able to link up aerodynamics and the vehicle dynamics side of things,” Fallows said. “He’s somebody who can help bridge the gap between departments.”
Marshall’s influence is also evident in the suspension design of the MCL39. The car features wishbone leg placements aimed at achieving anti-dive properties, which Fallows believes may have been influenced by Marshall’s oversight. “We called him Uncle Rob – he’s a lovely chap,” Fallows added. “He’s a good person to pull people together. He’s got no artifice or doesn’t play politics.”
Innovation and Strategic Development
Beyond his leadership qualities, Marshall is also known for his innovative approach. Fallows noted that McLaren has introduced some interesting innovations in the suspension department, which he attributes to Marshall’s influence. “I think he’s able to do that and also just to be that figurehead, somebody to go and talk to. It’s very useful in a team that particularly is under a lot of stress.”
In addition to his technical contributions, Fallows praised McLaren’s strategic approach to development. Unlike many rival teams, McLaren has taken a more cautious and consistent route in introducing updates. Rather than seeking immediate gains, the team focuses on thorough testing and gradual improvements. This method has proven effective over the past two seasons.
For example, McLaren introduced a new front wing at the Canadian GP weekend but only used it in practice to gather data before implementing it in Austria. “Since they made a leap in performance in 2023, what I think has been impressive is that some of their updates have not been visually very striking, but they’ve clearly had a plan,” Fallows explained.
Consistent Performance and Reliability
Fallows emphasized that McLaren’s success lies in its ability to reliably implement upgrades. “They’ve stuck to it and they’ve decided on a philosophy on how to improve the car and they’ve just gradually nibbled away at it and just got quicker and quicker.” This consistency has allowed McLaren to maintain a competitive edge despite the challenges posed by the current regulations.
While the team now uses the Mercedes power unit, Fallows pointed out that this factor is less relevant compared to other aspects of the car. “Most of the power units are, at this stage of the regulations, fairly consistently good as well,” he said.
Ultimately, McLaren’s success is the result of a combination of strategic planning, technical innovation, and strong leadership. With Marshall playing a pivotal role, the team continues to build on its progress and remain a top contender in Formula 1.
