A New Chapter in Tirana
At the age of 52, Cheryl Orlov made a life-changing decision that would take her from the familiar comforts of California to the vibrant streets of Tirana, Albania. After spending over 32 years running a furniture store in the South Bay region of California, she found herself yearning for something more than the routine of daily life.
Orlov had always been an avid traveler, having visited over 40 countries across all seven continents. However, there were still destinations that had not yet crossed her path. One such place was Albania, a country that caught her attention after a relationship break-up in March 2022. This moment marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life.
She discovered Albania through articles and videos about far-flung destinations, which sparked her interest in exploring this lesser-known European country. Intrigued by its slower-paced lifestyle, natural beauty, and warm hospitality, Orlov decided to take a scouting trip in September 2022. The experience left her awestruck by the rugged landscapes and sparkling shores of Albania.
The country reminded her of the California she had always wished to see before rapid development took over. She noticed a different quality of life, one that was more relaxed and fulfilling. Drawn to the delicious cuisines, warm hospitality, and proximity to other European destinations on her bucket list, Orlov decided to make Albania her new home the following year.
Since moving to Tirana, Orlov has embraced a vibrant social life, choosing to walk everywhere instead of driving. She also enjoys the affordability of living in Albania, where she rents a two-bedroom apartment for €500 per month—a price unthinkable in Los Angeles. The affordability extends to every aspect of life, including groceries, dining out, and even healthcare.
Through regular participation in meet-ups with local community-minded groups, Orlov has built a tight network of friends, including fellow expats and native Albanians. Away from the city’s bustle, she often spends her time touring agrotourism farms and wineries in the countryside, where she indulges in fresh cheese and seasonal wine.
On weekends, she appreciates the simplicity of being able to take a quick flight to nearby hotspots like Greece, North Macedonia, and Italy. Orlov also emphasizes that she feels incredibly safe in Albania, more so than she ever did back home. There is a strong sense of security, with people looking out for one another. She can walk through the city by day or night without worry, something she never realized she was missing until she found it.
For Orlov, relocating alone to the other side of the planet has not only enriched her life culturally but has also given her the opportunity to create the life she’s always imagined. She encourages those considering a similar move to plan a scouting trip before packing up their belongings.
Orlov adds, “Albania isn’t for everyone, and it’s important to explore different areas in person. I thought I wanted to live by the sea until I visited Tirana. Then I knew I had found my home.”
