A Commitment to Quality Education in Rivers State

Port Harcourt, Rivers State — The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, has reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to providing quality education at all levels. His message was clear: no child will be left behind or denied the chance for academic growth.

This commitment was highlighted during the 35th Convocation Ceremony and 50th Anniversary Celebration of the University of Port Harcourt. The event took place at the Chief Nyesom Wike Convocation Arena in Choba, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. It was a significant day marked by celebrations, reflections, and forward-looking plans.

As part of the ceremonies, the Administrator commissioned the Convocation Arena, an iconic structure completed under the leadership of former Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike. This facility stands as a testament to the progress made in the state’s educational infrastructure.

Vice Admiral Ibas outlined the broader strategy of the state government to invest in education. He emphasized sustained infrastructural development and increased funding for state-owned universities and related institutions. These efforts are aimed at strengthening these institutions to become centers of academic excellence and sources of hope for students and communities alike.

The Administrator expressed deep appreciation for the leadership of President Bola Tinubu. He acknowledged the president’s visionary approach, his commitment to national development, and the positive impact of his policies on the education sector. This support, according to Ibas, has created an environment where projects like the Convocation Arena can thrive.

He reiterated the government’s vision for education, stating that it is a fundamental pillar of sustainable development. The administration remains committed to supporting learning institutions from foundational to tertiary levels. The goal is to ensure that every child has access to education and that the state’s universities remain competitive on a global scale.

Vice Admiral Ibas described the University of Port Harcourt’s 50th anniversary as “historic.” He praised the institution for its legacy of academic distinction, research innovation, and societal impact. The administrator encouraged the university community to build upon this strong foundation with renewed determination to enhance its global relevance.

He noted that over the past five decades, the University of Port Harcourt has evolved from modest beginnings into one of Nigeria’s most respected centers of learning. It has produced leaders, thinkers, scientists, professionals, and patriots who continue to shape the nation’s future.

The Administrator also recognized the contributions of notable individuals awarded honorary doctorates during the event. These included the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu; the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike; the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri; and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of TETFund, Alhaji Aminu Masari. Their service to the nation and support for education were celebrated.

Addressing the graduating students, Vice Admiral Ibas commended their achievements and urged them to apply their knowledge and skills to make meaningful contributions to society. He encouraged them to become change-makers and responsible leaders in their respective fields.

In his address, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, expressed pride in the institution’s 50-year journey of academic excellence and service to the nation since its establishment in 1975. He announced that the university is conducting its 35th Combined Convocation Ceremony, conferring a total of 13,861 degrees. This includes 9,788 Bachelor’s degrees, 2,131 Master’s degrees, 208 Postgraduate Diplomas, and 934 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees.

The event underscored the importance of education in shaping the future of the state and the nation. With continued investment and a focus on excellence, the University of Port Harcourt continues to play a vital role in nurturing talent and driving progress.
