Bill Gates’ $645M Superyacht for Sale: Beach Club and Helipad Aboard

A Superyacht Like No Other

The superyacht named ‘Breakthrough’ has been described as the most extraordinary vessel ever constructed. Measuring 390 feet (118.8 meters) in length, this luxurious ship is said to be owned by billionaire Bill Gates. It features an array of high-end amenities, including a basketball court, a beach club-style infinity pool, 15 cabins, a helicopter landing area, and even a private hospital.

This remarkable yacht is not just about luxury; it’s also a pioneer in sustainable technology. It is the first hydrogen-powered ‘net zero’ superyacht, showcasing cutting-edge innovation in the maritime industry. The Breakthrough is set to make its debut at the Monaco Yacht Show in September, where it will be available for sale. However, its opulence comes with a price tag of $645 million, making it one of the most expensive yachts ever offered for sale.

Design and Features

The Breakthrough took five years to design and build, and it will be the largest yacht at the Monaco Yacht Show. It can accommodate up to 30 guests across 15 cabins, supported by a crew of up to 43 members. The owner’s quarters are particularly impressive, featuring a four-story townhouse that is completely private. This exclusive space includes two bedrooms, twin bathrooms, dressing rooms, a gym, a pantry, two offices with fireplaces, and a living room.

The owner’s deck is designed for family use and offers a range of private lifestyle destinations. These include a coffee corner and games niche on the bridge deck, a library on the main deck, and a private dining room with a sea terrace and adjacent ensuite stateroom on the lower deck. This setup creates a secluded four-level townhouse by the sea within the larger yacht.

The Breakthrough has five decks above the waterline and two below, with the owner’s deck located 121 feet (37 meters) above the water. There are also 14 balconies that remain hidden when closed but can be deployed with the touch of a button, extending their floors to match the interior.

Interior and Sustainability

The interior of the Breakthrough blends textured fabrics, leathers, marble, rattan, and limed oak to create a luxurious coastal vibe. Chief executive Jamie Edmiston describes the yacht as “the one that will change it all” due to its reliance on liquid hydrogen and a next-generation fuel cell system.

Hydrogen fuel cells have been used in rockets and cars, but the Breakthrough marks the first time they have been applied to a superyacht. The compressed liquid hydrogen is stored below deck at -253°C, and the heat generated during processing is used to warm the pool, steam room, towel bars, and flooring in guest bedrooms. For longer journeys, or when pure hydrogen is unavailable, the ship uses second-generation biofuel that reduces harmful emissions by 90%.

Edmiston emphasized that the goal was to build the greenest and most environmentally advanced yacht ever, without compromise. He praised the team for delivering on this ambitious vision. The yacht, designed by RWD and built by Feadship, is considered the best ever constructed.

Future of Yachting

Jan-Bart Verkuyl, director of Feadship, believes fuel cells will play a significant role in the future of yachting due to their superior efficiency, low particle emissions, and low noise radiation. Despite its high-tech features, it has been reported that Bill Gates has never set foot on the Breakthrough. Although he has not officially confirmed his connection to the yacht, it is widely believed that he was behind the project.

There are also reports that Canadian billionaire Patrick Dovigi, CEO of Green For Life Environmental, may be interested in purchasing the Breakthrough. As the world watches this extraordinary yacht make its debut, it sets a new standard for luxury, sustainability, and innovation in the yachting industry.
