Rain storm warning as massive weather system sweeps Australia and temperatures drop

Unprecedented Weather System Sweeps Across Australia

A massive weather system is sweeping across Australia, bringing with it a mix of rain, cold temperatures, and strong winds. This extensive wet weather system has stretched from the western to the eastern coast, impacting nearly every state and territory in the country. The recent week has seen widespread rainfall, with many regions recording their highest levels of precipitation for the year.

In Western Australia, a severe low-pressure system combined with a cold front and significant trough developed over the south-west on Sunday. Perth experienced its wettest day of the year, with damaging winds, heavy rain, hail, and thunderstorms hitting the city. The weather system is expected to move eastward on Monday, with meteorologists warning of continued inclement conditions.

Angus Hines, a meteorologist from the Bureau of Meteorology, explained that the system will bring showers and hail through the southern half of Western Australia and into South Australia. He noted that while showers will ease in the south-east, there are still 2-10mm of rain expected across parts of South Australia, New South Wales, and southern Queensland on Tuesday. There is also a chance of rain in Victoria and Tasmania.

The weather system will also bring colder air and snow to the mountainous regions of New South Wales and Victoria. Mr. Hines added that cold winds and patchy showers will continue, with light wet weather expected across most areas south of a line stretching from Perth to Port Macquarie.

On Thursday, a dry day is forecast, but showers and cool winds are expected on Friday for the country’s south-east. While some heavier falls or thunderstorms are possible, the details are still being monitored. A rainband could form over north-east Queensland, and another rain-bringing front is approaching the west coast, heading into next weekend.

Yoska Hernandez, a meteorologist from Weatherzone, highlighted the impact of a colossal low-pressure system spanning nearly half the size of the country. This system is set to bring chilly temperatures to southern and eastern parts of Australia this week.

In Melbourne and Adelaide, temperatures are expected to struggle to reach the mid-teens. Canberra may barely exceed a maximum of 10°C each day, with minimums dropping to a frosty 0°C on Thursday. Sydney will see minimum temperatures below 10°C for the week, with maximums in the mid-teens. Hobart is forecast to experience a minimum of 3°C, with daytime highs between 11°C and 13°C.
