New Administrator Takes Charge at National Judicial Institute
Justice Babatunde Adejumo (rtd) has officially assumed his role as the 9th Administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI) in Abuja. His appointment followed the conclusion of the tenure of the previous Administrator, Justice Salisu G. Abdullahi (rtd), on July 31, 2025. The decision to appoint Justice Adejumo was made by the Board of Governors of the NJI, under the leadership of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun. This decision was announced during a meeting held on July 3, 2025, and came into effect on August 1, 2025.
The official welcome for Justice Adejumo took place at the NJI, where he was received by the management and senior officers of the institution. Kolade Umoru, Head of Information and Public Relations at the NJI, shared details of the event, highlighting the warm reception given to the new Administrator.
At the welcome ceremony, Mr. Osmond Otobo, Director of Administration, praised Justice Adejumo for his leadership qualities during his time as President of the National Industrial Court. He emphasized that Justice Adejumo’s contributions included significant legal reforms, infrastructure development, and other notable achievements.
Otobo expressed gratitude to the Chief Justice of Nigeria for the appointment, calling Justice Adejumo a “great judicial technocrat.” He assured the new Administrator of the staff’s commitment to hard work and productivity, while also emphasizing the importance of a positive working environment within the institute.
In his response, Justice Adejumo acknowledged his long-standing relationship with the NJI, dating back to 1993. He mentioned that he has worked closely with the institution through various Chief Justices over the years. He pledged to maintain the high standards set during his tenure at the National Industrial Court, encouraging the staff to embrace discipline and dedication.
Justice Adejumo also emphasized his commitment to fairness and impartiality, stating that he is a “detribalised Nigerian” who will handle all matters based on merit. He recognized the importance of the NJI in shaping public perception of the judiciary and urged the staff to maintain transparency in their operations.
He outlined several initiatives aimed at improving the institute, including revising training modules to align with global best practices, enhancing staff welfare packages, and accelerating training programs across all levels. Additionally, he plans to modernize the institute’s information technology and library systems to increase accessibility and engagement.
With a distinguished career as a jurist, administrator, and educator, Justice Adejumo brings a wealth of experience to his new role. His previous position as President of the National Industrial Court has equipped him with a deep understanding of judicial administration and continuing education.
The NJI anticipates that Justice Adejumo’s leadership will significantly contribute to the advancement of judicial capacity, innovation, and ethical standards within the Nigerian judiciary.
