Elon Musk’s Shift in Political Strategy
Elon Musk has made a significant move in the political arena, offering a gesture of goodwill towards Donald Trump following their public split. This act involved donating $15 million to Trump and various Republican causes. The donations were made after a contentious period between Musk and Trump, which began when Musk left his role as chairman of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) but before he announced his plans to establish an independent political party called the “America Party.”
Musk contributed $5 million to three different super PACs that supported both the president and his party. According to filings with the Federal Election Commission, these contributions were made on June 27 to organizations such as MAGA Inc., the Senate Leadership Fund, and the Congressional Leadership Fund. Just eight days later, Musk officially launched the America Party, stating it was formed “to give you back your freedom.”
In 2025, Musk has donated a total of $45 million to his own America PAC, which was primarily used for an unsuccessful campaign in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election. The Daily Mail has sought comments from the White House regarding these developments.
Launching the America Party
Musk announced the formation of the America Party on his social media platform, X, shortly after Independence Day. This announcement followed an online poll he conducted on July 4 asking his followers if they supported establishing a new political party. The results showed 65.4% of respondents in favor, prompting Musk to make the official announcement.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk wrote. He criticized the current political system, stating, “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
From Advisor to Rival
Musk had previously held a prestigious position within the White House, acting as a special advisor to the president and overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency. However, recent months have seen a growing rift between the two former allies, resulting in public disputes that unfolded on social media.
Many had anticipated that the relationship between Trump and Musk would not last long, with betting markets even predicting when they would turn against each other. These markets heavily favored a fallout before July 1, 2025, less than six months after Musk joined Trump’s administration as a special advisor.
Musk’s journey from being a major supporter of Trump’s campaign—spending $288 million for his election—to publicly criticizing him online, including suggesting Trump was involved in the Epstein files, highlights the dramatic shift in their relationship.
The Breaking Point
The falling out occurred after Musk stepped down from DOGE over Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” which ended tax breaks for electric vehicles—a key project for Musk as CEO of Tesla. Musk argued that the bill undermined DOGE’s efforts to cut costs by increasing the deficit.
The tension escalated further when Trump rescinded his nomination offer for Musk’s ally, Jared Isaacman, for NASA administrator due to donations made to the Democrats. Since then, Trump and Musk have engaged in public attacks against each other.
Musk accused the president of ingratitude and claimed he would have lost the election without him, while Trump labeled him “crazy.” Following their public break-up, Musk threatened to start a new, third political party and support the reelection campaign of Republican Rep. Thomas Massie, who opposed Trump’s big bill.
Controversies and Denials
Trump recently revealed himself as the person who leaked details about Musk’s alleged drug use, according to author Michael Wolff, who wrote the book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House. The New York Times reported that during the 2024 presidential campaign, Musk used so much ketamine that he experienced bladder problems and also used Ecstasy, psychedelic mushrooms, and what appeared to be Adderall.
Musk has denied The Times’ reporting and released a drug test online since.
