Rabat, the administrative capital of Morocco, is witnessing a remarkable transformation. Official data obtained by Viral In MediaAR indicates that Rabat–Salé Airport recorded 88,000 arrivals in July 2025, reflecting a 26% increase compared to the same month in 2024. This surge in tourist numbers coincides with heightened activity at the city’s historical and cultural landmarks, where visitors are drawn to the unique blend of ancient heritage and modern architecture.
Local officials and civic leaders credit the growth to the royal development program “Rabat: City of Light, Capital of Moroccan Culture,” launched in 2014. This ambitious project aimed to position Rabat among major global capitals while elevating its status as a premier tourist hub.
Fruit of a Decade-Long Vision
Hicham Aqmahi, third deputy mayor of Rabat and a member of the Hassan district council, highlighted the tangible results of the “City of Light” initiative. He explained that the program sought to modernize Rabat’s infrastructure and elevate its cultural profile. Key achievements include upgrades in public lighting, administrative and cultural facilities, and the creation of new recreational spaces.
Aqmahi also pointed to the rehabilitation of iconic heritage sites such as Chellah and the Kasbah of the Oudayas, along with the protection of green spaces and improved access to public services. These milestones have significantly increased tourist interest from both Moroccans and international visitors.
The development of hotels and upgraded tourist services has further strengthened Rabat’s hospitality sector. Additionally, increased coordination between local and regional development agencies has helped solidify the city’s position on the global tourism map.
Competitive Edge Through Infrastructure and Safety
Ilham Belfahili, general secretary of the Moroccan Youth Civil Alliance Network, emphasized the unprecedented dynamism Rabat has experienced over the past three years. She noted that the city’s urban landscape has been reshaped, reinforcing its image as a top-tier tourist destination.
Belfahili cited the restoration of historic sites such as the Kasbah of the Udayas, Chellah, and the ancient medina, along with improvements to the beach, roads, tunnels, and pedestrian pathways. Infrastructure upgrades have extended to residential neighborhoods, contributing to the city’s renewed urban charm.
Rabat’s growing competitiveness is further enhanced by security and smart governance. The city’s reputation as a safe destination has been bolstered by permanent security deployment, surveillance cameras, and the digitization of services. These measures have boosted the attractiveness and stability of neighborhoods surrounding major tourist zones.
Transportation and Modernization Efforts
Transportation improvements have played a vital role in Rabat’s transformation. Belfahili pointed to the modernization of Rabat–Salé Airport, the introduction of direct domestic and international flights, and the operation of high-speed rail service. The launch of a new bus terminal with modern standards and the upgrade of the taxi fleet have further enhanced the city’s connectivity.
These developments have reinforced Rabat’s social and cultural fabric. Residents are known for their cultural awareness, openness, and tolerance, making the city a space for coexistence and welcoming visitors.
Belfahili added that once current infrastructure projects are completed, Rabat will be poised to compete more directly with Morocco’s top tourism destinations such as Marrakech, Agadir, and Tangier.
