Trump’s Summit with Putin Fails to Secure Ceasefire, But Aims for Full Peace Agreement
US President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a high-stakes summit, but the talks did not result in an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. However, Trump remained optimistic about the potential for a broader peace agreement. The meeting, held at a Cold War-era air base in Alaska, lasted three hours and was followed by discussions with European leaders, who expressed support for a new summit that would include Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump emphasized his commitment to achieving a full peace agreement rather than just a temporary ceasefire. He stated that the best way to end the war is through direct negotiations between the three countries involved. “It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a peace agreement, which would end the war,” he said, highlighting the importance of this approach.
Zelensky confirmed that he will travel to Washington on Monday to discuss the details of ending the conflict. He praised Trump for outlining the main points of the summit and expressed hope for further progress. Meanwhile, European leaders, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, joined a call with Trump after the summit. They supported the idea of a trilateral meeting and reiterated their commitment to maintaining pressure on Russia through sanctions and economic measures.
The European leaders also made it clear that Russia should not have a “veto” over Ukraine’s potential membership in the European Union or NATO. Their joint statement emphasized the need for a just and lasting peace, while acknowledging that the conflict continues to cause devastation and loss of life.
Despite the lack of immediate results from the summit, both Trump and Putin expressed optimism about future negotiations. Trump described the meeting as “extremely productive” and noted that there were “many points” agreed upon. However, he did not provide specifics on what those points were. He also mentioned that there are still some unresolved issues, though he did not elaborate on which ones.
Putin, during a brief press briefing, spoke generally about cooperation and expressed hope that the understanding reached during the summit would lead to peace in Ukraine. When asked about a potential second meeting, he smiled and said, “Next time in Moscow.” This comment was seen as a subtle attempt to flatter Trump, who has previously shown admiration for the Russian leader.
Before the summit, Trump had warned of “severe consequences” if Russia did not accept a ceasefire. However, after the talks, he suggested that these consequences might no longer be necessary. During a Fox News interview, he stated, “Because of what happened today, I think I don’t have to think about that now.”
Meanwhile, Putin issued a warning to Western allies, urging them not to create obstacles or engage in provocative actions that could disrupt the progress being made. He emphasized the need for stability and cooperation in the region.
On the battlefield, Russia has continued to make gains, which could strengthen its position in any future negotiations. While Ukraine claimed to have retaken several villages, Russian forces announced the capture of two more areas in Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
As the conflict continues, the focus remains on finding a diplomatic solution that brings lasting peace to the region. Trump’s efforts to bring together the three key players—Russia, Ukraine, and the United States—highlight the complexity of the situation and the challenges ahead. The upcoming meetings and discussions will be crucial in determining the next steps toward resolving the war.
