Zelensky’s Turn: Trump Urges Ukraine to Secure a Deal with Putin

Trump’s Summit with Putin and the Path to a Ceasefire

Donald Trump has urged Ukraine to “get a deal done” with Russia following a historic meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The summit, held at an air base in Anchorage, aimed to explore ways to end the ongoing conflict between the two countries. Trump welcomed Putin warmly, emphasizing the importance of finding a resolution to the war.

The discussions, which lasted nearly three hours behind closed doors, ended without an immediate ceasefire. Both leaders met with reporters after the talks and expressed that while no concrete agreement was reached, there was a mutual understanding on key issues. Putin warned Europe against undermining any progress made during the meeting, highlighting the need for cooperation.

Trump described the meeting as “very well” and called it a “great and very successful day in Alaska.” He shared this sentiment on his social media platform, indicating a positive outlook despite the lack of immediate results.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not present at the Alaska summit but is scheduled to meet with Trump at the White House on Monday. During a post-summit interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Trump emphasized that the responsibility now lies with Zelensky to make a deal. He suggested that Ukraine might be outmatched against Russia’s military capabilities, stating that Russia is a powerful force with strong soldiers.

“I think we’re pretty close to a deal,” Trump said. “Ukraine has to agree to it. Maybe they’ll say no. President Zelensky has to agree. It’s up to President Zelensky to get it done.”

When asked about his advice to Zelensky, Trump reiterated the need for a deal, stating, “Make a deal. Gotta make a deal.” He highlighted Russia’s military strength and the challenges faced by Ukraine in the conflict.

Trump also mentioned that he and Putin had discussed potential land swaps and security guarantees for Ukraine. “I think those are points that we negotiated, and those are points that we largely have agreed on,” he said.

Zelensky has consistently stressed the importance of security guarantees for Kyiv as part of any peace deal. These guarantees are intended to prevent future invasions by Russia. Following the Alaska summit, Zelensky spoke with Trump in a one-on-one call, lasting over 90 minutes. In a message on social media, he outlined his vision for a lasting peace, emphasizing the need for an end to fighting across all fronts and the return of prisoners of war and captured civilians.

He also called for stronger sanctions against Moscow if there is no trilateral meeting or if Russia attempts to evade an honest resolution to the war.

After the summit, Trump indicated that there were only a few major obstacles remaining in the path to a peace deal. He expressed hope that the upcoming meeting with Zelensky could lead to three-way talks with Putin. “Potentially, millions of people’s lives will be saved,” he stated on his Truth Social platform.

As the situation continues to evolve, the focus remains on finding a sustainable solution to the conflict, with the involvement of all key stakeholders. The outcome of these discussions will be closely watched by the international community.
