Trump hosts South Korea’s Lee to discuss North Korea and trade

Trump and South Korean President Discuss North Korea and Military Presence

During a meeting at the White House, US President Donald Trump engaged in discussions with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. The conversation centered on several key topics, including the ongoing situation with North Korea, trade relations, and the presence of the US military in South Korea.

Trump expressed his admiration for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, referring to him as a “peacemaker.” He emphasized his strong relationship with Kim, suggesting that he has a better connection with the North Korean leader than most others, except for Kim’s sister, Kim Yo Jong. Trump also mentioned his hope to meet with Kim again during his second term, stating, “I look forward to seeing him.”

The discussion included plans to enhance cooperation between the two countries in sectors such as shipbuilding and manufacturing. Trump indicated that he would have serious conversations with Lee about the trade relationship between the United States and South Korea.

Military Base Ownership and Financial Contributions

In addition to trade, Trump addressed the issue of US military bases in South Korea. He expressed a desire for the US to take ownership of the land where these bases are located. This proposal comes as part of a broader push for South Korea to contribute more financially to hosting approximately 28,500 American troops stationed in the country.

“I spent a lot of money building a fort, and there was a contribution made by South Korea, but I would like to see if we could get rid of the lease and get ownership of the land where we have a massive military base,” Trump said. This statement reflects his ongoing efforts to renegotiate the terms of the US-South Korea military alliance.

Despite the focus on military and economic issues, the meeting between Trump and Lee appeared to be amicable. Lee praised Trump for his efforts in promoting peace, particularly in relation to North Korea.

A Shift in Tone: Trump’s Criticism of South Korea

However, just hours before the official meeting, Trump took a different approach. He used his social media platform, Truth Social, to express concerns about the political situation in South Korea. His post read, “WHAT IS GOING ON IN SOUTH KOREA? Seems like a Purge or Revolution. We can’t have that and do business there.”

Trump did not provide specific details about what he meant by the comment. When asked for clarification later, he mentioned raids on churches by the South Korean government, including an incident where officials entered a US military base. “They probably shouldn’t have done that,” he stated.

This criticism came after South Korea conducted raids on locations linked to the Unification Church. Founded by the late Sun Myung Moon, the church has been a subject of controversy in both South Korea and Japan. It is under investigation for allegedly offering luxury items as part of lobbying efforts in Seoul.

In Japan, a court recently ordered the Unification Church to lose its official recognition, which means it will no longer be exempt from taxes and must liquidate its assets. This development has drawn attention to the church’s activities and its influence in the region.

Ongoing Concerns and Future Implications

While Trump’s comments were brief, they highlight the complex relationship between the US and South Korea, particularly regarding the role of religious groups and their impact on political and economic stability. The president’s remarks underscored his sensitivity to any actions that might affect US interests in the region.

As the discussions continue, the future of US-South Korea relations remains a topic of interest, especially given the potential implications for regional security and trade. The interactions between Trump and Lee reflect the delicate balance of diplomacy, cooperation, and occasional tension that defines international relations.
