Actors Celebrate Ibadan’s Legacy in Ladoja’s Coronation Play

A Cultural Celebration of Ibadan’s Royal Heritage

As part of the coronation ceremonies for former Oyo State Governor Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, who was recently named the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, a special performance of the play Arusa took place on Monday evening at the Apex Event Centre in Agodi, Ibadan. The event brought together theatre enthusiasts, locals, and guests to celebrate Ibadan’s rich royal heritage through this cultural production.

The play Arusa, written by Gbemi Faleti, produced by Biodun Latinwo Eleni, and directed by veteran theatre practitioner Yomi Duro-Ladipo, was a highlight of an eight-day celebration marking Ladoja’s coronation. The play was initially conceived as a tribute to Ladoja’s 80th birthday but was later integrated into the coronation events after his preference for a more private celebration.

The Journey Behind Arusa

Producer Biodun Latinwo explained that the idea for Arusa began as a way to honor Ladoja, whom he described as a father figure and benefactor. “When we first approached Gbemi Faleti and Yomi Duro-Ladipo, our goal was to stage Arusa as a birthday tribute. However, when Kabiyesi preferred a quiet celebration, the plan was put on hold,” he said. “It wasn’t until news of his coronation came that we revived the project. Now, Arusa is a fitting addition to this historic moment.”

Latinwo also highlighted how the play reflects Ladoja’s journey from business to politics while honoring his ancestry. He credited Baba Ojerinde Onibudo for providing the oral history that shaped the script’s foundation.

A Story That Transcends Time

Gbemi Faleti, the writer and associate producer, emphasized that the challenge of writing Arusa went beyond chronicling the life of a single historical figure. “I realized that focusing solely on Arusa Ogungbenro wouldn’t capture Ladoja’s essence,” he said. “So, I wove the stories of two figures—the ancient Arusa and the modern-day Arusa—into one narrative. This approach allows the play to transcend time, highlighting themes of resilience, leadership, and destiny across generations.”

Faleti described the creative process as rigorous, involving weeks of rehearsals with the director and cast. “Arusa is more than just a play; it is a cultural statement, a tribute to heritage, and a celebration of leadership. It entertains, but it also inspires reflection on Ibadan’s greatness and its sons’ legacy.”

The Legend of Arusa Ogungbenro

The play dramatizes the life of Arusa Ogungbenro, the legendary progenitor of Ladoja. Traditionally, a chosen carrier of the deity Orisa Aabonabon, known as the Arusa, receives wealth and privileges from the Baale but dies within a year, trapped in a cycle of sacrifice.

Ogungbenro of Laleye steps forward when fear grips the town and carriers begin to flee. Unlike his predecessors, he survives not once but three consecutive festivals, breaking tradition and unsettling the chiefs who profited from the curse. His survival sparks political tensions, intrigues, and plots, culminating in his voluntary resignation and bold decision to name his wife, Morolayo, as the next carrier. His defiance reshapes Oke-Agala’s destiny, leaving a legacy that inspires generations.

A Star-Studded Cast

The production features a star-studded cast, including Dele Odule, Taiwo Ibikunle, Taofeek Adewale (Diaboluja), Toyin Adegbola, Akeem Alimi (Ajala Jalingo), Gbemi Faleti, Ayo Williams, and Kayode Olaiya (Aderupoko), among others. Their performances bring the story of Arusa to life, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative.

The Coronation Events

Activities marking Ladoja’s coronation began on Monday with an interdenominational prayer at Olubadan Palace in Oke-Aremo, Ibadan North Local Government Area. The former governor is set to be crowned Olubadan of Ibadanland on Friday, September 26, a day after his 81st birthday, at the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan South East Local Government Area.

Ladoja became Olubadan designate following the death of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025. His coronation marks a significant moment in Ibadan’s history, celebrating both its royal lineage and cultural richness.
