In the latest episode of Apple TV’s The Morning Show, titled “Amari,” Nicole Beharie plays Christina Hunter, a character who takes center stage. In “Amari,” Beharie’s character, known as Chris, is a former Olympic medallist turned journalist. Education and Early Achievements
Beharie was born in West Palm Beach, Florida, in January 1985, to a Jamaican-English mother and an African-American father. Her father worked in the U.S. Foreign Service, leading the family to move between countries during her childhood. She attended Juilliard drama school in New York City and was awarded a Shakespeare scholarship to study at the University of Oxford.
“I was honoured to receive it, but I didn’t think I was going to,” she said in an interview with The I Paper in 2020. “I remember thinking, ‘They’ve got all these people who fit the mould of who is supposed to get a Shakespeare scholarship.’ And then I got it and I was like, ‘Ooooh, what?! All right, then we are going!’ It turned a challenge into an adventure.”
Award-Winning Career
Beharie made her film debut in the 2008 film American Violet, where she played the leading role of Dee Roberts. Her performance earned her several nominations and the African-American Film Critics Association’s best actress award in 2009.
She has since appeared in various films, including Steve McQueen’s Shame (2011) and 42 (2013), a film based on the life of Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to play Major League Baseball. In 42, Beharie portrayed Rachel Robinson, the wife of the late Chadwick Boseman. When Boseman passed away in 2020 after battling cancer, Beharie shared a heartfelt message on Instagram: “Chad wanted us to see our brilliance … our potential. He brought such beauty here, blessing us while he battled, never letting on to his struggle. Giving us only his light and inspiration.”
Beharie also had recurring roles in TV shows such as Sleepy Hollow from 2013 to 2016.
