Enhanced Security Measures to Counter Terrorist Movements
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced that it is intensifying proactive measures to prevent the migration of fleeing terrorists into communities across the country. This comes as part of a broader strategy to ensure national security and protect civilians from potential threats.
Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, Director of defence media operations, highlighted that the military high command is fully aware of terrorist factions relocating to certain communities in response to increased military pressure. The recent United States air strikes on terrorist cells in Sokoto and other locations have further heightened the situation. These actions, combined with the efforts of the Nigerian Air Force and ground forces, have created a more challenging environment for terrorist groups.
Onoja also emphasized the serious concern over the influx of armed herders into specific communities. He stated that Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) assets are actively monitoring terrorist movements across various operational theatres. Several movements have been identified and are currently being tracked.
He urged communities to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies. Citizens are encouraged to promptly report any suspicious activity or movement to the nearest security formations. The DHQ reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and upholding national security. “Troops of AFN and other security stakeholders remain committed to denying terrorists, insurgents, bandits, kidnappers and other criminal elements freedom of action in the country,” he said.
Regional Responses to Security Threats
In Kebbi State, there have been reports of bandits moving into the state from neighboring Sokoto. Upon receiving these reports, Governor Nasir Idris directed the state police command to increase security in the affected areas. Ongoing surveillance and patrols are being conducted around the state to counter such movements and possible attacks by terrorists.
In Delta State, traditional rulers have met with the leadership of non-indigenes in their communities to address the issue of profiling strangers. They have agreed to monitor and report any suspicious individuals to community leaders and security forces.
Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda Olufemi, ordered a massive deployment of personnel across the state to provide adequate security and protect residents. He mandated Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, to organize continuous ‘Operation Show Of Force’ across the state.
Strategic Deployment of Patrol Teams
The commissioner directed all area commanders, DPOs, and tactical commanders to identify and deploy personnel to all entrances and exits in the state. Patrol teams have been drawn from various units, including Dragon Patrol, Safer Highways, Quick Response Squad, Rapid Response Squad, CP-SAT, and Eagle-net special squads. These teams have been deployed along key locations such as Asaba/Onitsa Head bridge, Anwai Campus gate to Illah, Onicha Ugbo to Idumuje-Ugboko and PTI, DSC Roundabout.
Officers have also been deployed to critical routes like Asaba – Agbor expressway, Abraka to Eku road, and Asaba to Kwale/Ughelli road. Patrol teams from Abraka, Ughelli, and Sapele Divisions have been stationed along Abraka, Eku, and Ughelli express roads. Massive deployment has also been made to all flash points within Asaba Metropolis. The DPOs of Ekpan and Ebrumede divisions have been directed to ensure adequate security in Warri, Effurun, and surrounding areas.
Additionally, marine police have been deployed along waterways to enhance security in vulnerable regions.
Conclusion
As the security landscape continues to evolve, the coordinated efforts of various security agencies and local communities are essential in maintaining peace and stability. The ongoing measures reflect a commitment to addressing emerging threats and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
