Gunmen Attack Plateau Village, Kill Seven, Injure Others

Violence Erupts in Plateau State Village, Leaving Seven Dead

A violent attack unfolded in a village located in the Qua’an-Pan Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State on Friday night. The incident resulted in the deaths of seven individuals and left several others injured. According to eyewitnesses in Jos, the state capital, the attack took place in Bong village, within the Doemak District. The assailants conducted a house-to-house assault, specifically targeting vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly.

Residents who survived the attack described the attackers as heavily armed. Survivors reported that most of the victims were those who could not escape in time, highlighting the sudden and brutal nature of the assault. Mr. Lawrence Dogari, a native of the local government council, confirmed the attack, stating, “For now, I can confirm to you that over seven persons have been killed, while some persons are still missing.”

Danaan Cletus Sylvanus, the Director of Press and Publicity to the Executive Chairman of Qua’an-Pan Local Government Council, also verified the incident. He mentioned that the exact number of fatalities was not yet known. “The council boss, Hon. Christopher Audu Manship, is condemning the attack on innocent persons and is collaborating with security operatives to ensure that the culprits are arrested,” Sylvanus said. He added that the council chairman promised to provide updates as more information becomes available.

Despite the efforts of the local authorities, the response from the state Police Command has been limited. Alabo Alfred, the spokesman for the state Police Command, did not answer several calls when contacted by our correspondent for comment on the issue.

This attack marks the latest in a series of violent incidents carried out by gunmen in Plateau villages in recent times. The situation has raised concerns among residents and local leaders, who are calling for increased security measures to prevent further violence.

On Christmas Eve, gunmen had previously attacked the Bum community in Jos South Local Government Area, resulting in the deaths of seven people. These recurring attacks have created a climate of fear and uncertainty in the region.

Impact on the Community

The impact of these attacks extends beyond the immediate loss of life. Families have been left grieving, and the sense of safety in the community has been severely shaken. Many residents are now questioning their security and the ability of local authorities to protect them.

The psychological trauma experienced by survivors and witnesses cannot be overstated. Children, in particular, may suffer long-term effects from witnessing such violence. This has led to calls for mental health support and community counseling services to help those affected.

Calls for Action

Local leaders and community members are urging the government to take swift action to address the growing threat of violence. They are demanding increased police presence, better intelligence gathering, and more effective measures to apprehend those responsible for the attacks.

In addition, there are calls for greater collaboration between different communities to foster peace and prevent future conflicts. Initiatives aimed at promoting dialogue and understanding between different ethnic groups could play a crucial role in reducing tensions and preventing further violence.

As the investigation into the recent attack continues, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victims and their families. The hope is that this tragedy will serve as a catalyst for meaningful change and improved security in the region.
