U.S. Military Action in Venezuela and Its Global Implications
On the 4th, a prominent political figure from the Reform Party made a statement regarding the recent U.S. military operation that led to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his spouse. The leader suggested that the same legal reasoning used against Maduro could potentially be applied to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
The individual shared a post on Facebook, highlighting how the U.S. Attorney General had charged Maduro with orchestrating the influx of cocaine into the United States and using the proceeds to fund terrorist organizations. This led to the classification of Maduro not as a “head of state,” but rather as the “leader of a transnational criminal organization.” The statement also referenced long-standing accusations against Kim Jong-un, suggesting that similar charges have been raised by the international community.
Allegations Against North Korea
The leader provided several examples to support this claim, including:
- The involvement of the Workers’ Party of Korea’s Room 39 in the production and export of methamphetamine and opium.
- Hacking activities conducted by the Reconnaissance General Bureau’s ‘Lazarus Group,’ which targeted global financial institutions and cryptocurrency exchanges, resulting in the theft of tens of billions of dollars.
- The production and distribution of ‘supernotes,’ which are highly sophisticated counterfeits of U.S. $100 bills.
- The 2017 assassination of Kim Jong-nam at Kuala Lumpur Airport in Malaysia, where the VX nerve agent was used.
- The detention and subsequent death of American college student Otto Warmbier due to torture.
These incidents, according to the leader, demonstrate a pattern of behavior that aligns with the charges brought against Maduro.
Concerns About International Reactions
The leader also expressed concern about the potential implications of the U.S. military action. He noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin might be closely observing the situation. There is a fear that the U.S. operation, justified under its legal framework, could be misinterpreted as a signal that allows China to use the pretext of “suppressing separatist forces” against Taiwan. Similarly, Russia might exploit the justification of “eradicating Nazis” to justify actions in Ukraine.
South Korea’s Role in International Relations
The Reform Party leader emphasized the need for South Korea to clearly communicate its stance to the international community. He stressed that the principle of not allowing the unilateral use of force to become a universal means of resolving disputes must be articulated. If South Korea fails to clarify this principle, it may find itself without a foundation to speak out when China or Russia employs similar logic in other regions.
The leader called on the South Korean government to ensure the safety of its citizens residing in Venezuela and to actively support the principle of easing tensions in the international community.
U.S. Military Operation Details
Earlier on the 3rd, the U.S. military carried out a ground operation in Venezuela, leading to the arrest and transportation of President Maduro and his spouse. In response, U.S. President Donald Trump held an emergency press conference at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. He praised the operation, stating that it demonstrated the full capabilities of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Trump described the operation as a success unseen since World War II, emphasizing the display of American power.
