Ogun State Launches Teacher Internship Program to Address Rural Education Shortcomings
The Ogun State Government has taken a significant step towards improving the quality of education in rural areas by engaging 448 OgunTeach interns and deploying them to public primary schools. This initiative is aimed at addressing the persistent shortage of teachers across the state, particularly in underserved communities.
The program was officially announced through a statement released by the state government on its X (formerly Twitter) platform on Wednesday. The successful candidates were presented with their engagement and posting letters at the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) Secretariat in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Commitment to Rural Education
At the ceremony, the Chairman of SUBEB, Evangelist Olalekan Ifede, emphasized the importance of this recruitment drive. He highlighted that the program was specifically designed to strengthen the manpower in rural schools, urging the interns to accept their postings with a sense of commitment and responsibility.
“If anyone calls me to seek a change of posting, we will remove the person’s name immediately. There are many others seeking this opportunity, and you should appreciate Governor Dapo Abiodun for making this engagement possible,” Ifede said during his address.
He also warned that requests for redeployment would not be entertained, stressing the need for the interns to value the opportunity they have been given.
Immediate Action Required
Ifede further directed the interns to resume duty immediately, noting that failure to do so would result in automatic replacement. He also emphasized the importance of submitting assumption-of-duty documents promptly to ensure timely salary processing.
“We do not want your payment to be delayed. Salary processing will only commence for those who submit their assumption-of-duty documents early,” he added.
A Call to Service
The chairman described the engagement as a call to service rather than an entitlement. He urged the interns to work harmoniously with their headteachers and colleagues, emphasizing that dedication, discipline, and performance would determine their chances of being considered for permanent appointment.
“Basic education is the foundation of our system. We need teachers who are determined and committed to ensuring that pupils can read, write and communicate effectively,” he said.
Merit-Based Selection Process
Earlier, the Director of Administration and Supplies at SUBEB, Femi Fatade, explained that the selection process was strictly merit-based. He added that the postings were carried out in line with the specific needs of rural schools across the state.
This approach ensures that the interns are placed where they are most needed, contributing to the overall improvement of the educational infrastructure in Ogun State.
Interns Express Gratitude
Responding on behalf of the interns, Adedayo Taiwo expressed appreciation to the Ogun State Government under Governor Dapo Abiodun for the opportunity. He assured that the beneficiaries would discharge their duties diligently and in line with expectations.
Conclusion
The OgunTeach internship program represents a vital effort by the Ogun State Government to enhance the quality of basic education in rural communities. By deploying trained interns to public primary schools, the initiative aims to bridge the gap in teacher availability while fostering a culture of commitment and service among young educators.
