Sanda Ojiambo, the Assistant Secretary-General, CEO & Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, has carved a path that reflects her unwavering commitment to global sustainability. Her journey began in 1997 with CARE International in Somalia, where she laid the foundation for a career dedicated to addressing inequality and promoting development. From there, she joined the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Somalia before moving to Nairobi to work at the Africa Regional Office of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF).
In 2008, she transitioned into the private sector, joining Safaricom as Senior Manager of the Safaricom and M-Pesa Foundations. This role allowed her to lead public–private partnerships between Safaricom and UN agencies, further expanding her influence. Two years later, she was appointed Head of Sustainable Business and Social Impact at Safaricom, a position that served as a stepping stone to her current role at the UN.
Ojiambo’s career is defined by her belief in seizing opportunities. “Just say yes to opportunities,” she often says, reflecting on a career spanning over two decades. Her journey has been marked by a blend of public service, corporate leadership, and development work, each phase contributing to her unique perspective on global challenges.

As the leader of the world’s largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative, Ojiambo has gained invaluable exposure to the complexities of global business, politics, and civil society. She describes her role as one of constant learning and adaptation, where no two days are ever the same. “It’s a real privilege to see how this interplay of global business, politics, civil society, and dealing with world issues functions,” she notes.
Her work involves navigating the intricate dynamics of international cooperation, ensuring that the private sector plays a meaningful role in addressing global challenges. While she acknowledges the complexity of the world, she remains focused on her mission: to contribute to a more equitable and sustainable future.
Reflections on Personal Growth and Legacy
Ojiambo’s reflections reveal a deep sense of purpose. She often asks herself, “Has it mattered that I was here today?” This introspection guides her daily actions and decisions. For her, the question is not about grand achievements but about the small, meaningful contributions that shape the world.
Her parents played a significant role in shaping her values. Her father, who worked at the United Nations, inspired her early interest in global affairs. Her mother, a strong role model, instilled in her a sense of ambition and intellectual curiosity. This diverse background has given her a holistic understanding of the challenges facing the world. “My career has spanned a number of sectors,” she explains. “I believe if there’s anything unique about my trajectory, it’s the multi-sectoral work that I’ve done across the African continent.”

When asked what she is chasing, Ojiambo responds with a mix of optimism and urgency. “I’m anxious, I’m optimistic, I’m uncomfortable with the state of the world,” she says. She sees both progress and persistent challenges, driving her to continue making a difference. Her goal is to ensure that children around the world have equal opportunities, regardless of their background.
She also reflects on the sacrifices made along the way. “Everything calls for sacrifice or choices,” she says. Moving to New York during the pandemic was one such decision, requiring her to leave loved ones behind. However, the support from colleagues, family, and friends made the transition possible.
Finding Balance and Connection
For Ojiambo, finding balance is essential. Home remains a sanctuary, offering a connection to her roots. She finds comfort in simple things like Kenyan coffee and food, as well as in her art collection. “The things that are important to me are the small things,” she says. Her artwork reflects her optimism and appreciation for cultural diversity, blending East African influences with global elements.
Friendship, too, plays a vital role in her life. “Leadership is lonely,” she admits, emphasizing the importance of authentic connections. Technology helps bridge distances, allowing her to stay connected with loved ones despite her busy schedule.
