Indigenous People of Biafra Leader’s Supporters Plan Major Protest
A group of supporters of Nnamdi Kanu, the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is preparing to hold a large-scale protest in Aba, Abia State. The demonstration, organized by the Coalition of Lovers of Freedom, will be known as the “One Million March” and is set to take place on March 12, 2026, in the city.
The event has been widely publicized through flyers distributed to local media outlets, including The PUNCH. These materials urge supporters from across the region to gather in Aba to demand Kanu’s release. The organisers have emphasized that the protest will be peaceful and aimed at expressing their concerns about his imprisonment.
In a separate statement issued on Wednesday, Obinna Ichita, a former member of the Abia State House of Assembly, addressed participants and called for calm and responsibility during the event. He urged attendees to act with discipline and civility, highlighting the importance of maintaining peace and respecting the law.
“As Aba citizens prepare to gather tomorrow, I appeal to all participants to act with responsibility, discipline and civility,” he said. “As a proud Aba indigene, my call is guided by ongoing efforts by responsible leaders to secure a peaceful and constructive resolution. While emotions run high around Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, our strength lies in wisdom, unity and respect for life, property and the rule of law.”
Ichita also encouraged protesters to avoid any actions that could lead to the politicization of the gathering. He urged them to express their concerns peacefully while respecting the authority of security operatives.
Background on Nnamdi Kanu
Nnamdi Kanu, who led the IPOB, was sentenced to life imprisonment on terrorism-related charges. The trial judge, James Omotosho, ruled that prosecutors had successfully proven that Kanu used the IPOB platform to incite attacks on security personnel and civilians in the South-East and during anti-police protests in Lagos.
Kanu, who also holds British citizenship, was first arrested in October 2015 on treasonable felony charges. His conviction in 2025 has sparked widespread debate and criticism, with many calling for his release. Despite the legal proceedings, some continue to view him as a symbol of resistance and a voice for the Igbo people.
Ongoing Calls for Release
Critics of the Nigerian government argue that Kanu’s arrest and conviction are part of a broader pattern of suppressing dissent and targeting activists who advocate for the rights of marginalized groups. They believe that his imprisonment is politically motivated and that the charges against him lack sufficient evidence.
Supporters of Kanu argue that he has been unfairly treated and that his actions were aimed at drawing attention to the struggles of the Igbo people. They claim that his detention has only fueled further unrest and that a peaceful resolution is necessary to restore stability in the region.
The Role of the Media
The media has played a significant role in covering the events surrounding Kanu’s trial and the upcoming protest. Local and international outlets have reported on the legal proceedings and the growing public support for his release. However, the coverage has often been polarizing, with some outlets framing the protests as a threat to national security and others highlighting the demands for justice and human rights.
The Significance of the Protest
The “One Million March” is expected to draw thousands of participants from across Nigeria. It represents a powerful show of solidarity with Kanu and a challenge to the government’s stance on the issue. The protest is not just about one individual but also about the broader struggle for freedom, self-determination, and the right to express political views without fear of persecution.
As the date approaches, tensions are likely to rise, and security forces are expected to be on high alert. The outcome of the protest could have significant implications for the future of the movement and the political landscape in Nigeria.
