President Samia Suluhu Hassan Receives UN Secretary-General’s Message
President Samia Suluhu Hassan has received a special message from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, delivered through the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy, Mr Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, during a visit to Chamwino State House in Dodoma.
The envoy’s visit was part of broader efforts to engage with various stakeholders and evaluate the measures implemented by the Tanzanian Government to enhance political stability, national cohesion, and the rule of law following incidents of unrest before and during the General Election held on 29 October 2025. This initiative reflects the United Nations’ commitment to supporting democratic processes and fostering peace in the region.
In a statement released by the Director for Presidential Communications, Mr Bakari Machumu, the focus of the visit was on gathering insights from different sectors of Tanzanian society. The UN has acknowledged the steps taken by the Government, including the formation of an Independent Investigation Commission, the promotion of inclusive national dialogue, and the ongoing constitutional reform process. These actions are seen as essential components in addressing the challenges that arose during the election period.
The statement also highlighted the United Nations’ appreciation for Tanzania’s long-standing history of peace, political stability, and national unity. It further recognized the country’s contributions to peace initiatives across Africa, emphasizing the importance of maintaining such values in the face of emerging challenges.
During his stay, Mr Onanga-Anyanga met with leaders from various national institutions, including:
- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation
- The Judiciary
- The National Assembly
- The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties
- Leaders of political parties
Additionally, he engaged with the Independent Investigation Commission and other stakeholders to gain a comprehensive understanding of the events and the Government’s response. These consultations aim to ensure that the United Nations has an accurate picture of the situation, which is vital for promoting national reconciliation, restoring public confidence, and strengthening democratic institutions.
President Hassan expressed her gratitude to UN Secretary-General António Guterres for sending a Special Envoy to Tanzania. She emphasized the Government’s commitment to conducting a thorough review of the events in accordance with the rule of law, accountability, and justice. This approach is seen as critical to maintaining peace, national unity, and political stability, which are the cornerstones of the country’s development.
The statement also noted that the Government is prepared to act on recommendations from the Investigation Commission once its work is completed. These recommendations will play a central role in advancing national reconciliation and driving forward constitutional reforms.
