European Leaders Prepare to Support Zelensky in Crucial Talks with Trump
European leaders are making a swift journey to Washington, D.C., to show solidarity with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as he prepares for a critical meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday. This gathering comes amid growing concerns over the potential outcome of the discussions, especially after recent developments involving Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff.
Witkoff recently made headlines by stating that the United States had successfully pressured Russian President Vladimir Putin into agreeing to a “NATO-style” security agreement for Ukraine. His comments were shared during an interview with CNN, where he emphasized that offering Ukraine “Article 5-like protections” could be a significant breakthrough. According to Witkoff, this proposed security guarantee was described as “game-changing” and marked a major shift in the negotiations.
However, there are deep concerns among European leaders about the possibility of Zelensky being caught in a trap set by Putin. Reports suggest that Trump might push for a deal that involves Russia gaining control over parts of Ukraine, particularly Donetsk and Luhansk—two regions currently under occupation. These areas have been a focal point of the conflict, with Putin demanding full control as a condition for ending the war.
Zelensky has firmly stated that giving up territory for peace could be “impossible.” In a speech in Brussels, he highlighted that Ukraine’s constitution prohibits ceding any land. He further emphasized the need for direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, suggesting that such discussions should begin at the current front lines. European leaders have expressed support for this approach, reinforcing their commitment to standing alongside Ukraine in these challenging times.
The Ukrainian president also reiterated the importance of establishing a ceasefire before moving forward with final peace negotiations. He expressed gratitude for the support from Washington, acknowledging that it is crucial for the ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict. However, Zelensky remains unclear about all the demands Putin may have raised during his meeting with Trump in Anchorage, Alaska.
The world is still processing the implications of Trump’s meeting with Putin in Alaska, where the former U.S. president appeared to welcome the Russian leader. Many international observers believe that the summit was a win for Putin, who seemed energetic and satisfied with the outcome. Conversely, Trump appeared disheartened, perhaps due to the lack of progress in reaching a comprehensive agreement.
In response to criticism, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to defend his actions. He accused the media of distorting the truth and claimed that the so-called “Fake News” would never report honestly about him. Trump also highlighted his achievements, including stopping several wars, while expressing frustration with the political climate.
Witkoff also addressed the issue of territorial concessions, pointing out that the five regions annexed by Russia include Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. He mentioned that Russia made some concessions regarding these areas but noted that the discussion on Donetsk will continue. The Donbas region, which is predominantly Russian-speaking, has been a key battleground since the conflict began.
Zelensky has rejected Putin’s demands for Kyiv to withdraw from the remaining 30% of Donetsk that it controls. Despite the Russian advances, he downplayed the situation, claiming that his forces are countering the efforts of the occupier and increasing pressure on them.
European leaders, including Sir Keir Starmer, Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron, are expected to join Zelensky in Washington for the talks. Other participants include Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
This meeting follows a video call hosted by Western allies, where they discussed the next steps in addressing the conflict. Downing Street has confirmed that the leaders are prepared to support the ongoing negotiations and reaffirm their backing for Ukraine. A statement from No. 10 said that the Prime Minister and other European partners stand ready to support the next phase of talks and will continue to back Ukraine as long as necessary.
