A Tense Encounter Between Putin and the Press
During a recent meeting in Alaska, Russian President Vladimir Putin found himself under intense scrutiny from American journalists. The encounter took place as he sat alongside former U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of their historic summit. As members of the press were ushered into the room, Putin appeared visibly uncomfortable when asked about the possibility of a ceasefire and his actions in Ukraine.
One journalist shouted out: “Mr. Putin, will you break ceasefire?” while another asked, “Will you commit to not killing any more civilians?” In response, Putin put his hands to his mouth and said something inaudible before making a face of confusion. Another question followed: “President Putin, why should President Trump trust your word now?” However, before he could respond further, the press were quickly escorted out of the room.
A Historic Summit with Mixed Results
Despite the tense exchange with the press, both leaders proceeded with their two-and-a-half-hour summit. Unfortunately, no immediate agreement was reached on the issue of Ukraine. Afterward, Trump addressed the press, stating, “There’s no deal until there’s a deal.” He acknowledged that while they had many points of agreement, one significant issue remained unresolved.
Trump expressed optimism, saying, “We didn’t get there, but we have a very good chance of getting there,” though he did not provide specific details. He also emphasized that the decision ultimately rested with the Ukrainian people, adding, “It’s up to them who have to agree with what my administration thinks.”
A Surprising Response from Putin
As the press conference concluded, Putin surprised Trump by responding in English, asking, “Next time in Moscow?” Trump, visibly taken aback, replied, “Oh, that’s an interesting one… I’ll get a little heat on that one, but I can see it possibly happening.”
The press conference lasted only 12 minutes, with no mention of a ceasefire. Before the meeting, Putin praised Trump as his “dear neighbor” and thanked his administration for striving to address the core issues between the two nations. He also mentioned that he greeted Trump by saying, “Good afternoon, dear neighbour. Very good to see you in good health and to see you alive.”
Reactions from Both Sides
Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev described the Trump-Putin meeting as “incredibly well.” However, Ukrainian politician Oleksandr Merezhko criticized the summit, calling it a “failure.” He claimed that Putin used his usual rhetoric about security concerns without showing any real changes.
In response to criticism, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to accuse the media of distorting the truth. He stated, “There is NOTHING I can say or do that would lead them to write or report honestly about me.” He also referenced the war in Ukraine, claiming it was a “stupid War” that should never have happened.
Zelensky’s Stance on Peace Talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made it clear that giving up land for peace could be “impossible.” Speaking in Brussels, he emphasized that Ukraine’s constitution makes it “impossible to give up territory or trade land.” He added that discussions on territorial issues should occur at a trilateral meeting involving Ukraine and Russia.
Zelensky is set to meet with Donald Trump in Washington, accompanied by several European allies, including Sir Keir Starmer, Ursula von der Leyen, Friedrich Merz, and Emmanuel Macron. He reiterated the need for a ceasefire to facilitate further negotiations, stating that Ukraine does not yet know all of Putin’s demands from the meeting.
Support from European Leaders
Downing Street has confirmed that Sir Keir and other European leaders are ready to support the next phase of talks to end the war. A statement from No. 10 said, “At the meeting that will take place at the White House tomorrow, the Prime Minister, with other European partners, stands ready to support this next phase of further talks.”
Sir Keir recently commended Trump for bringing the conflict “closer than ever” to an end. As the situation continues to evolve, the path to peace remains uncertain, with both sides facing significant challenges in reaching a lasting agreement.
