Madison Cawthorn, the former North Carolina congressman known for his fiery rhetoric and controversial behavior, faced a dramatic and unexpected setback in his bid to return to Congress. On Wednesday, the 28-year-old Republican was arrested in Florida after failing to appear in court over a traffic citation. The incident marked a chaotic beginning to what many had hoped would be a political resurgence.
Cawthorn, who now resides in Cape Coral, was taken into custody at his home by Lee County deputies after missing an 8:30 a.m. court hearing in Collier County. The hearing was related to a traffic stop that occurred on August 19 in Naples, where he was cited for driving without a valid license. According to the Collier County Clerk of Courts, an out-of-county warrant was issued when Cawthorn failed to show up. He was booked and released on a $2,000 bond within hours.
The arrest came as a shock to many, especially given that Cawthorn was reportedly preparing for a political comeback. He is considering a run in Florida’s 19th Congressional District, a deep-red seat that will soon be vacated by Rep. Byron Donalds, who is running for governor. It occurred less than 24 hours after Cawthorn met with Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill to discuss launching a campaign from his new home state. Cawthorn’s history with Florida authorities is not new. In 2024, he was involved in a collision along Alligator Alley in Collier County, where he hit the rear of a Florida State Trooper vehicle. Cawthorn first gained national attention in 2020 when he became the youngest member of Congress in over two centuries at just 25 years old. Backed by Donald Trump, he represented North Carolina’s 11th District for one term before personal scandals and conflicts within the party led to his defeat. Despite Trump’s endorsement, he lost his seat to Rep. Chuck Edwards, marking a sharp decline for one of the party’s most prominent young voices.
After his loss, Cawthorn moved to Florida and largely disappeared from the national spotlight. However, his recent interest in running for the open seat in Florida’s 19th District has reignited discussions about his potential return to politics. The district spans parts of southwest Florida, including Fort Myers and Naples, and offers a strong base for a conservative candidate.
Rep. Byron Donalds, a rising GOP star and Trump ally, is stepping down to run for governor in 2026. Cawthorn has privately confirmed his intent to run, and several Republicans have already filed paperwork for the race. More candidates are expected to join, making the primary a competitive affair.
While the GOP is confident in holding the seat, they are closely watching who will emerge as the next representative. For House Speaker Mike Johnson and other leaders navigating a narrow majority, Cawthorn’s return could be more of a liability than an asset. His history of clashes with party leadership, tendency for controversy, and past personal issues make him an unpredictable candidate.
As the political landscape in Florida continues to evolve, the question remains whether Cawthorn can overcome these challenges and successfully re-enter Congress. His journey thus far has been anything but smooth, and the road ahead looks equally uncertain.
