Fires Linked to Electrical Issues Cause Damage in North Gyeongsang Province
On New Year’s Day, two fires caused by electrical factors were reported in Andong and Yeongju, both located in North Gyeongsang Province. These incidents resulted in property damage and injuries, prompting investigations into the underlying causes.
Fire in Andong City
According to the North Gyeongsang Fire Headquarters on the 2nd, a fire broke out around 10:30 p.m. the previous day in a vinyl house in Pungcheon-myeon, Andong City. The blaze destroyed 33 square meters of a 981-square-meter vinyl house along with tools, causing property damage valued at 6,700,000 Korean won.
A man in his 40s, who managed the vinyl house, suffered first-degree burns on his right palm while attempting to extinguish the fire. Firefighters deployed 28 personnel and nine fire trucks, successfully putting out the fire approximately 40 minutes after it started.
Police are currently investigating the cause of the fire, suspecting that electrical factors within the vinyl house’s facilities may have been responsible.
Fire in Yeongju City
Around 10 p.m. on the same day, another fire occurred in an apartment in Joam-dong, Yeongju City. This incident was attributed to an electrical short circuit caused by a water leak. Despite the rapid response from firefighters, who used 35 personnel and 12 pieces of equipment to extinguish the blaze in about 20 minutes, the fire led to partial damage to power distribution facilities.
As a result, a power outage affected 160 households across nine buildings for over four hours. Property damage was estimated at 2,000,000 Korean won. Power was eventually restored around 2:45 a.m. on the 2nd.
No Casualties Reported
A fire official confirmed that there were no casualties in either of the incidents. However, the fires highlight the potential dangers associated with electrical systems, especially during periods of high usage or when combined with other environmental factors such as water leaks.
